The roof of our home in Hesse is 54 years old and made of grey slate shingles. If you do the math, you know that the house was built in 1967 and has faced a few winters as well as some hot summers in its 54 years of time. About 10 years ago, we had a storm that blew a few shingles down, it got fixed and that was that. During winter, our roof is the only one in the entire street not covered by snow or ice. Reason for that, the roof and attic has no insulation. So, lots of heating in winter to keep the place warm and a lot of heat going in and no cooling (except for the AC we got a few years ago) in summer.

Das Dach unseres Hauses in Hessen ist 54 Jahre alt und aus grauen Ziegeln. Wenn Ihr rechnen könnt, dann wisst Ihr, dass das Haus 1967 gebaut wurde und schon einige Winter und Sommer hinter sich gebracht hat. Vor 10 Jahren, während eines Sturmes, flogen einige der Schieferziegeln vom Dach, wir reparierten es und gut wars. Im Winter waren wir immer das einzige Haus das keinen Schnee auf dem Dach hatte in der Strasse weil es so schlecht isoliert war (gar nicht nämlich). Also viel heizen im Winter, viel Hitze im Sommer (bis wir uns eine Klimaanlage kauften).

Mit dem Dach fing unsere Renovierungsgeschichte 2016 an, nachdem wir aus Kalifornien nach Deutschland zurück kehrten. Wir informierten uns, wussten aber relativ schnell was wir wollten - Ein Metalldach. Nicht gerade üblich in Deutschland bei einem Wohnhaus, eher etwas was man an grossen Industriebauten sieht oder auf Scheunen. Aber wir liebten das Bild und die Idee, obwohl viele uns abrieten weil es angeblich zu laut ist bei Regen.
This is how our remodel journey started. In 2016, after we returned from our Cali life, we started to enquire about possibilities to put a new, insulated roof on the house. We knew very quickly that we wanted a metal roof. Very uncommon in European Homes, more common in industrial buildings and on barns. But we loved the idea, despite some telling us it would be too loud if the rain would hit the roof. We set our minds on a metal roof.
Einige Jahre später und wir kommen im Jahr 2021 an und wir sind immer noch verliebt in das Metalldach. Wir beschliessen ein Aluminiumdach zu nehmen. Sie sind sehr standfest, kommen in vielen verschiedenen Formen und Farben. Nebenher, zeigte man uns auch Zinkdächer, aber sagte uns die kosten zu viel. Die Idee wurde verworfen bis wir eines Abends überlegten wieso wir uns Aluminium auf unser Dach installieren wollen, wenn unsere Körper voll vergiftet sind damit (die meisten Menschen heutzutage haben eine Aluminiumbelastung im Körper durch essen und Hygienemittel - zum Beispiel Deos!
Unsere Entscheidung war also damit Niet- und nagelfest gefällt. Trotz höherer Kosten entschieden wir uns für ein Zinkdach von VMZinc.

Fast forward, here we are in 2021 and our hearts are still set on the metal roof.
During our research we first got interested in Aluminum roofs. Their durability is pretty good, the variety is large, the colors too. Sandblasted with different coatings you can get an array of beautiful styles and variations. On the side, we also got introduced to zinc roofs, though way more expensive. So we put the zinc aside again until one night, we figured, why put Aluminum, a heavy metal a lot of us harbor in their bodies due to over usage in food and products (think antiperspirants in the 90s and early 20), over our head to shield us from the storms and heat when we are poisoned with the metal and have tried to get rid of the toxin in our body? So this made our final decision on the material easy: despite the cost we decided on zinc. The company we are going with is VMZinc.
Während ich mit einem Vertreter über die Garantie eines solchen Daches sprach und ihn fragte wie lange dies ist, fragte er mich ob ich schonmal in Paris war und mir die Kirchen und Kathedralen dort angesehen hätte. Diese, sagte er mir, seien alle aus Zink gefertigt (die Dächer) und die meisten wohl mehr als 100 Jahre alt (eher 500)...das war genug um uns auch von der Garantie des Metalles zu überzeugen und dessen Standhaftigkeit.
While researching its warranty, I got to talk to one of their distributors who asked me: "Have you ever been to Paris and have seen all the church and cathedral roofs? Those are all made of zinc and most are well over 100 years old (more like 500)... that was enough for me to get sold on the quality of a zinc roof and its durability.
In Sachen Isolation, verliessen wir uns auf den Dachdecker unserer Wahl der sich mit den neusten Regulationen und Materialien auskennt. Er empfahl uns auch über die KFW Bank ggf. Rabatte einzuholen die man für ein Effizienzhaus bekommen kann wenn man sich qualifiziert. Wir entschlossen uns jedoch im Bereich Dachbau dagegen, weil wir die Auflagen nicht erfüllen wollten die es hierzu braucht, planen aber in der Elektrik und Bodenheizung davon Gebrauch zu machen.
In regards to insulation, we chose a well known roofer who is working with the newest insulations, conform to the newest rules and regulations when it comes to this topic.
We had a wonderful roofer who knows his craft and spent several hours with us on how we want the roof to look in the end. We also considered an energy program that - if you go by all rules - gives you a discount on the entire project but in the end decided against it, because it would have cost us more to meet all their regulations and must haves.
We will though make use of some other programs that give so called efficiency home rebates, if you comply with their regulations (such as in our heating system and electrical).
Was wir noch raten, ist einen guten Architekten an der Seite zu haben. Wir sind sehr dankbar hier einen guten gefunden zu haben, der uns zur Seite steht bei fachlichen Fragen, Prüfungen der Angebote und zugleich auch Gutachter ist.
I have to say, get a good architect on your side. He represents your interest and is your go to person if you don't understand the estimates, the jargon, the numbers. We were very lucky to find ours and it was money well invested (and they are not cheap).
Kurzum, es wird ein Zinkdach über unserem Kopf sein in der Farbe QuartzZinc und ich kann es kaum abwarten es auf unserem alten Haus zu sehen.
So with that said, a Zinc roof it will be in the color Quartz Zinc and I cannot wait to see in on our old house!
